Procedure for first-time applicants
How can I register?
The easiest way to get your driving licence starts with the online registration form that we have provided for you on this website. All the necessary steps are described there, and at the end you will be shown all your contract details for printing and/or saving.
Can I also register at a branch?
Of course, you can still register at one of our branches. The registration staff will discuss any open questions with you and guide you through the online registration form.
What do I need to do after registering?
After registering, you can start your theory lessons straight away. Depending on the type of driving licence you are applying for, you will need to complete 14 to 18 theory lessons.
You should also submit your application to the relevant authority as soon as possible so that your driving licence application can be processed. Depending on the authority, it currently takes up to three months to process applications, so you should submit your application in good time. Once your application has been processed by the authority, you will receive an advance payment from the TÜV (Technical Inspection Agency) almost immediately and will then be admitted to the test sections.
How many theory lessons do I have to take?
That depends on the driving licence. The exact number will soon be shown on the registration form. Please note the special lessons depending on the driving licence class: if you are taking class B, for example, you must attend topics 13 and 14.
When can I start my driving lessons?
During the theory lessons, you will get to know various driving instructors. You can approach them yourself to arrange your first driving lesson. You can also add yourself to the waiting list via your user account. As a rule, the first driving lessons are only held after you have completed half of the theory lessons.
When can I take my theory exam?
You can register for an exam through the office if you have no theory lessons left, you have sufficiently studied the approximately 1,400 questions with the app, and you have paid your exam fee to the TÜV.
When can I take my practical test?
Only after you have completed all compulsory drives (night drives, cross-country drives and motorway drives) and passed your theory test will you be admitted to the practical test.
The theory test is valid for 12 months, during which time you must complete the practical driving test. You can arrange a suitable time with your driving instructor, who will register you for the test in consultation with the office.
Procedure for extension
What do I need to bear in mind when extending my licence?
If you already have a driving licence and now want to obtain another one, this has a number of advantages.
However, as these are very individual, we ask you to fill out the online registration form. All relevant questions and answers are listed there so that you know exactly what to expect.
Procedure for converting a foreign driving licence
How many theory lessons do I have to take?
No theory lessons are required for a transfer. However, to increase your chances of passing the theory test, it may be worthwhile visiting one of our branches.
When can I start my driving lessons?
Ideally, after you have passed your theory test. Then ask for the mobile number of a driving instructor and arrange your first lesson with them. They will then arrange new driving lessons and/or the test directly with you.
